Alberta Cross “Money for the Weekend” presented by Ketel One

Posted on 19 July 2011.

Imagine you and your friends are walking down an unnamed street and pass a seedy garage when you hear the booming sounds of a cool band. Intrigued by the group’s seismic guitar riffs and Southern blues vibe, you stealthily tiptoe into the garage’s slightly opened side door when you realize you have stumbled upon an Alberta Cross rehearsal.

They are playing “Money for the Weekend,” an homage to American classic rock and a sure summer hit. You and your friends can’t help it and you dance and sing along to the music as if it was a private concert designed just for you. That is how the aesthetic of the Ketel One Vodka sponsored music video for Alberta Cross’ “Money for the Weekend” comes across. If you have a beating heart, this video will leave you ravenous for more.

School Knights playful lyrics and adolescent song names(“Bullies,” “Recess” and “Cliques”) bring back memories of everyone’s pubescent awkward phase. Thankfully, the music is anything but. Their newest song is reminiscent of classic punk rock with it’s simple lyrics “Oh She’s so cool, oh yea He’s so cool” sung over the same guitar riff.

On the guitar played throughout “Bullies” and “Cliches” you can hear a seamless transition from metal into old school punk rock. The results of School Knights playlist are songs that induce memories of simpler times causing the listener to stop what they are doing, pick up their air guitar and jam just like they did every Saturday night during that awful awkward phase.

blissful allusion Blissful Allusion compilation download

Although, the song names of the compilation album, Blissful Allusion, would make an intriguing sentence (Forever in My Mind Jimmy Francis is To Nice To Be True, he has a Marx on My Heart and Day and Night he Call(s) My Phone In Party and Leaving is a Feeling like Coconut Milk and Ysalamiri), don’t let the names fool you for each one is filled with meaning.

The album is divided into two parts: bliss and allusion and each song delivers to the theme. The allusion section has deep spiritual roots using its cross continental inspired influences freely and the bliss section is everything its name promises to be with songs that induces smiles and memories of better times.

Babes-Jets

babes jets music Babes Jets

Jets is one of five albums produced by Babes. Unlike most bands who appear to pull songs out of a hat to decide tan album’s song order Babes choose to tell a story. Their narrative is fresh and inviting and allows the listener to take a musical journey through their five songs.

The first two songs “Jets” and “Jjets” are mirrors of each other and show that this band has the creative freedom to reinterpret their own song into something familiar yet new. “Whitney” is ominous and foreboding much like the rising action in a story. “Kitty” is surprising compared to the other songs because of its lyrics “Will you be my girlfriend?” and playful composition. “Up” finishes the album with whispered lyrics sung with an experimental vibe and its muddled ending reminds the listener of a journey that has come to an abrupt stop signaling that the Babes are not finished yet.
